What is Capper doing now?

Warwick Capper, a Gold Coast meter maid and a white shoe compete for Gold Coast United mascot duties in the Queen Street Mall today. Warwick Capper, come on down. With A-League crowds flagging badly, the Brisbane Roar have taken their cause to the streets to try and generate interest in Sunday's derby against Gold Coast United at Suncorp Stadium. Their weapons of choice? Capper, a bikini-clad meter maid and a giant white shoe. Lunchtime crowds in the Queen Street Mall were given the chance to help the Roar select a mascot for the new Gold Coast franchise, which unlike Brisbane (Roary the Lion), remains defiantly mascot-free.

The white shoe, in honour of the dodgy Coast developers of the '70s and '80s, was an early favourite thanks to some even dodgier dancing, only to be quickly overtaken by the meter maid, whose shapely presence was warmly welcomed by the males in the audience and later, by Roar youngster Michael Zullo. Not surprisingly, though, it was Capper who stole the show.

Dressed in a tight-fitting muscle shirt and short-shorts, the former Sydney Swan and Gold Coast icon rocketed to favouritism among the smattering of Roar fans, particularly when he revealed he didn't know a single GC player and hadn't seen a game of soccer in 20 years. "I made the Sydney Swans about $100 million in exposure mate," said Capper, a former porn star and would-be politician. "Why not put the soccer on the map?" Decision seemingly made, now all the Roar have to do is get people to the game, one they are desperate to win after losing to their new arch-enemy in the season opener and falling 2-1 to the Melbourne Victory in a spiteful encounter last weekend.

The remnants of that game are still hurting the club, which levied an undisclosed fine on Danny Tiatto after he raised his finger to Victory fans. Tiatto will be missing this weekend after he was suspended by the FFA for one game, while midfielder Charlie Miller has been handed a two-game ban for striking former teammate Robbie Kruse. It adds insult to injury for the Roar, who are already missing Brazilian star Henrique (knee) and skipper Craig Moore (Socceroos), while the Gold Coast have Shane Smeltz and Jason Culina on representative duties as well.

It's hardly the line-up the clubs need as they try to reverse the downward trend of crowds. Both South-East Queensland clubs have been hard hit, with the Roar attracting only 7677 fans in their last home game against Sydney FC on September 27.

The average crowd for the clash is almost 25,000. "The crowds haven't been great this season but it has been like that across the league, so anything we can do to get a bigger crowd this weekend would be what we are looking for," said Zullo, who is recovering from injury and looking to return via the youth league. Dutch striker Sergio van Dijk looked somewhat bemused by today's proceedings but had his mind firmly on Sunday's game, saying the Roar would need to step up in the absence of some of their biggest names. "It's a big loss but we're a professional soccer team so we have to handle it," van Dijk said

Wendell Sailor and Warwick Capper's boxing showdown 2009
ONE is a trash-talking rugby league giant, the other a G-string-wearing playboy. Now they are set to go head-to-head, with Wendell Sailor revealing he will fight Warwick Capper in a boxing showdown at Star City next week.

Big Dell has promised to knock out the former Swan when the pair slug it out next Thursday night. "He bagged my arse once so it is on,'' Sailor said. "Seriously, if I lose to a bloke that wears a G-string I will leave the country. "I will find a nice little island and disappear forever.'' "I have to take him seriously,'' Sailor said. "

I have had the scouts out and he is 6ft6in and weighs 112kg. I am 6ft3in and weigh 112kg. "He has a big reach and apparently he is pretty fit.'' Sailor has sounded out Anthony Mundine to help him prepare. "I'll call 'Choc' and I will be going down to train with him next week,'' Sailor said.

The dual international had reservations about taking the fight until Star City agreed to donate money to charity. "Half the purse will go to the Samoan tsunami appeal,'' Sailor said. "I am going over there soon to lend a hand on a trip organised by Nigel Vagana. I would not have taken the fight otherwise.'' In good news for Dragons fans, Sailor has not ruled out playing on. "The good thing about this fight is that it will make sure I stay fit,'' Sailor said. "I want to return to the off-season in good shape should I play.''
